Our mission is to provide high-quality electron microscopy services, education, and training for the UC Berkeley campus, other academic institutions, and private companies at-large. The lab is equipped with high resolution transmission electron microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, high pressure freezer and full suite of ancillary sample preparation equipment to fit most EM-related needs. The equipment can provide nanometer scale analysis for biological, chemical and materials science. The EML offers multiple levels of service that correspond with the services and training each user desires: Project consultation Education and training for new users Equipment for trained users who anticipate having long-term EM projects Full service microscopy All services are available to anyone with an interest in electron microscopy: graduate and undergraduate students, post-doctoral researchers, faculty, staff, and non-UC users. Please note, the EML now provides fee-for-service full service microscopy for campus and external users as our staff availability allows on an ad hoc basis. Use the Quotation form to request this service. In addition to providing training as a service, the EML supports two MCB courses: MCB 481 B and 481 C. We encourage any UC Berkeley student working with a mentor on campus (undergrad or graduate level) to talk with us about taking the course. It is a great way to get trained to use the equipment in the facility. She earned her PhD from UC Berkeley (2013) in Comparative Biochemistry, where she trained in advanced sample preparation techniques including cryopreservation for cells and tissues. She was a post-doctoral fellow and then a research assistant professor specializing in the ultrastructure of cancer biology at Oregon Health and Science University. Her research interests focus on the ultrastructure of the nucleolus and nucleus in cancer and normal tissues. She is also interested in developing novel methods and applications for volume electron microscopy (Volume EM) and correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM). She had training in transmission electron microscopy while working on her research project titled “Adriamycin treated rat myocardium-light & Transmission electron microscopic study”. His postdoc training was focused on studying the three-dimensional (3D) structure of biological macro-molecules at New York University. He oversees the training and operation of the SEMs within the EML, maintains the website, and teaches the SEM course (MCB 481C). He earned a degree in Botany from UC Berkeley (1972) and did his post-doctoral training in cell biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. His primary research interest was the ultrastructure of the mitotic spindle apparatus. In recent years, he became interested in development and application of cryopreservation techniques for high resolution EM and EM immunocytochemistry. Dr. McDonald continues to be active in the EM field and is an avid photographer. Email: klm@berkeley.edu Gordon Vrdoljak is a 22 year veteran in analytical chemistry and earned a PhD in Chemistry from the Department of Environmental Sciences at UC Berkeley. He was a Senior Research Associate within the EML at UC Berkeley, where he taught classes in electron microscopy. Following his time with the EML, Dr. Vrdoljak became a Research Scientist IV in the Food and Drug Laboratory at CDPH, a Research Scientist Supervisor of the Chemistry Section of the same Food and Drug Laboratory, and most recently, the Research Supervisor of the Cannabis Testing Section of the Food and Drug Laboratory at CDPH. He has a passion for science and in his spare time enjoys science fiction, ice skating with his daughters, and photography. He has a blog of science images at spicnspan.blogspot.com . For data collection or sample preparation conducted in our facility, by the user or our staff, we ask that the EML be acknowledged in the manuscript, publication or other media. If a particular staff member assisted you, please acknowledge them specifically. An example of a general acknowledgement: “Thank you to the staff at the University of California Berkeley Electron Microscope Laboratory for advice and assistance in electron microscopy sample preparation and data collection.” Further, we would like to highlight and elevate the profile of our user’s work and as such request that any publications be shared with us electronically so that we can link to them from our website. Please come to our new location at 21 Barker Hall on the ground floor. Dec. 4, 2019 EML will be closed from 12/23/2019 to 1/1/2020 for the holidays.
